An Urgent Appeal: The Loss of the Umbrellabird Lek

by | Apr 11, 2024 | Newsletters

As we step into April, the heart of spring and the month we celebrate Earth Day, it’s a poignant time to reflect on our bond with nature and reaffirm our commitment to protecting our planet’s invaluable ecosystems. Our foundation, Amarun Pakcha, nestled in the majestic foothills of the Ecuadorian Amazon, continues to champion this cause through sustainable ecotourism and conservation efforts.

However, this month’s newsletter carries a mix of updates – a testament to the ever-present challenges and triumphs in our journey towards sustainability and conservation.

An Urgent Appeal: The Loss of the Umbrellabird Lek

It is with heavy hearts that we share the disheartening news of the loss of our cherished Umbrellabird Lek. This invaluable habitat, once vibrant with the unique presence of the Amazonian Umbrellabird, was recently cleared by a local family in dire financial need. Despite their initial willingness to collaborate with us for conservation, the pressing need for immediate financial resources led them to convert this precious land into agricultural plots.

Deforestation to plant naranjilla

This situation underscores the fragility of our ecosystems and the urgent need for collective action. The loss of the Umbrellabird Lek is not just a loss for Amarun Pakcha but a loss for global biodiversity and our shared natural heritage.

In light of this, we appeal to you, our community of supporters and nature enthusiasts, to help us prevent further losses. Your contributions can empower us to secure critical habitats before they are irreversibly altered. Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to preserving the natural wonders of the Ecuadorian Amazon for future generations.

A Beacon of Hope: Edwin Tanguila’s Inspirational Journey

In the spirit of resilience and progress, we are thrilled to share an uplifting update from our President, Edwin Tanguila. Edwin recently embarked on a transformative tour, graciously hosted by the Ecuadorian Development Fund (FECD), exploring sustainable coffee enterprises and farms across the Ecuadorian Sierra. This enriching experience has not only broadened our understanding but also reinforced our commitment to sustainable agricultural practices within our community, Wawa Sumaco.

Under Edwin’s guidance, we are now more energized than ever to support initiatives that intertwine coffee production with polyculture systems. By doing so, we aim to bolster the economic resilience of our region while steadfastly safeguarding our ecosystems. These efforts are vital steps towards a future where conservation and community livelihoods flourish in harmony.

Join Our Cause

As we navigate these times of triumph and tribulation, your support remains our cornerstone. Together, we can forge a path towards a more sustainable and equitable world. This Earth Day, let’s renew our pledge to protect our planet’s irreplaceable treasures.

We invite you to be part of our mission. Visit our website to make a donation, learn more about how you can contribute to our ongoing projects, or reserve your tour of our project. Let’s stand united for nature, for culture, and for future generations.

With gratitude and hope,
