Dear Friends and followers,
This past month, I stood in the cool waters of a pristine Amazonian stream, helping to gently clean moss from the ancient petroglyphs carved into its river stones. It was a profound moment—standing where cultures before us had left their mark, on land we were able to protect together earlier this year. I felt deep joy: to witness its beauty, to see it cherished, and to hope for your continued support as we safeguard it for generations to come.
An Inspiring Visit to Amarun Pakcha
Our first small group visit to Amarun Pakcha was a tremendous success. The Fundación Amarun Pakcha community offered a warm welcome and together our small group of 6 visitors experienced the land’s beauty, its ancient culture, and the innovative work taking place. Some of the highlights included:
- Listening to the Land: Tour participant Jeff Hunter brought along sound recording equipment, allowing us to experience the forest in a new way. For Juan Carlos, an Amarun Pakcha birding guide, listening in this new way introduced him to a deeper connection with the sounds of the forest.
-
Sustainable Innovations on the Farm: Sylvia, our community coordinator, and agronomist Ken are revitalizing the chakra farm with regenerative agriculture. Together, they are planting aromatic ground covers like ginger, lemongrass, and pineapples to enrich the soil and diversify crops. They’re even experimenting with acai – perhaps a first in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
-
Community Creativity: The energy and talent within the community shone brightly. Tour participant Scott Drake shared photography lessons with Ivan, another Amarun Pakcha guide while Angie captured inspiring interviews with Edwin, the Foundation’s President, and his wife, Marta. Marta moved us all, speaking passionately in her native Kichwa and Spanish about the importance of preserving culture and land. These interviews will soon be available on our Instagram channel.
