Dear Friends,
Looking back over the past year, It is incredible to see the changes that have already taken place. That is due, in large part, to Edwin Tanguila.
Spotlight on Edwin Tanguila
We are incredibly proud of our President, Edwin Tanguila, whose journey from a humble naranjilla farmer to a conservation hero is truly inspiring. Edwin has dedicated his life to sustainable development and the conservation of the Amazon rainforest.
Edwin’s efforts established the Fundación Amarun Pakcha, which aims to protect over 5,000 hectares of Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest. Learn more about his story and his vision for the future in the latest article on our website.
Welcoming a Renowned Naturalist
We are overjoyed to welcome the renowned Naturalist Guide and tourism consultant, Norby Lopez, to our team! Norby will be working alongside Edwin Tanguila and our dedicated Ecuadorian team to create a strategic, sustainable tourism plan. Norby’s experience helping found the Napo Wildlife Center means he understands the intricacies of creating community tourism projects that resonate with international audiences while respecting local cultures. We aim to ensure that tourism positively impacts the Wawa Sumaco economy and strengthens community bonds.
Farm Developments and New Beginnings
Great news from our pilot project farm! The frame for our brand-new greenhouse is up and changes at the pilot project take place every single day. We are grateful to the hard work of our agronomist Ken Galeano, our community coordinator, Sylvia Shiguango, and to Edwin!
Even more exciting, Ken and his wife have welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their family! Ken is taking some well-earned time off to enjoy his new bundle of joy.
Supporting Education
Thanks to a generous $5,000 donation, we are thrilled to be able to support more university students in staying in school and pursuing their dreams. But our mission doesn’t stop there—many more families still need help, and your monthly donation can make a HUGE difference in their lives. Let’s keep the momentum going!

How You Can Help
Your support is the lifeblood of our mission. Every contribution, big or small, helps us make a significant impact on the Wawa Sumaco community. Whether through a one-time donation or a monthly pledge, your generosity enables us to continue our vital work in promoting sustainable ecotourism and supporting the local economy.
Our Mission
In closing, we are pleased to announce that our US 501(c)(3) organization has rebranded to Friends of Amarun Pakcha! This fresh new name better represents our mission and values, making our work clearer and more inspiring for everyone involved. We want you to know that your donation to our non-profit supports the work of the Fundación Amarun Pakcha in Ecuador.
At Amarun Pakcha, our team offers sustainable ecotourism services that include bird-watching tours, hikes to our stream and waterfalls, and visits to pre-Inca petroglyphs within the foothills of the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest. Our objective is to provide educational, cultural, and environmental experiences that allow visitors to discover the natural and cultural wealth of the area while supporting the conservation of the forest and its inhabitants. Your donations help support this important work.
Thank you for being a part of our journey.
Sincerely,
Ellen Jacobson,
Friends of Amarun Pakcha
